FUKADA , Y. and SAITO, H. Phasic and Tonic Cells in the Cat's Lateral Geniculate Nucleus. Tohoku J. exp. Med., 1972, 106 (2),209-210 Relay neurons in the cat's lateral geniculate nucleus have either on-center or off-center receptive field. They are further classified into Type-I (phasic) and Type-‡U (tonic). Type-I cells are activated by faster conducting opfic tract fibers and send the visual information to visual cortex by faster conducting radiation fibers, while Type-‡U cells area ctivated by slower fibers and extend slower radiation fibers, while Type-‡U cells are activated by slower fibers and extend slower radiation fibers, while Type-‡U cells are activated by slower fibers and extend slower radiation fibers. cat's lateral geniculate nucleus; receptive field; discharge pattern; con duction velocity

Response latencies of cells in the cat's lateral geniculate nucleus are less variable during burst than tonic firing.

We measured the variability in latency of the first spike seen in cells of the cat's lateral geniculate nucleus following the onset of a visual stimulus. We found that, in each of the 11 cells tested, this variability was significantly lower during burst than during tonic firing. We suggest that this difference confers an advantage in signal detection during burst compared to tonic firing. This...

Receptive-field properties of cells in the dorsal part of the albino rat's lateral geniculate nucleus.

Receptive-field properties of 273 relay (principal, P-) cells of the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (LGd) were studied in urethane-anesthetized albino rats, in an attempt to see if there is some relation between the visual property and the conduction velocity of afferent optic nerve fibers. According to properties of the receptive-field center, P-cells were classified into two types, common ...

The brain-stem parabrachial region controls mode of response to visual stimulation of neurons in the cat's lateral geniculate nucleus.

We recorded the responses of neurons from the cat's lateral geniculate nucleus to drifting sine-wave grating stimuli both before and during electrical stimulation of the parabrachial region of the midbrain. The parabrachial region provides a mostly cholinergic input to the lateral geniculate nucleus, and our goal was to study its effect on responses of geniculate cells to visual stimulation. Ge...

Synaptic excitation of principal cells in the cat's lateral geniculate nucleus during focal epileptic seizures in the visual cortex.

Principal cells of the lateral geniculate nucleus are intensely activated during focal seizures in the visual cortex. The intracellular recordings technique from geniculate cells was used to show that this activity is induced by a strong excitatory synaptic input from discharging cortico-geniculate neurones in layer 6 of the cortex.

Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis of neurons in the cat's lateral geniculate nucleus during tonic and burst response mode.

Relay cells of the lateral geniculate nucleus respond to visual stimuli in one of two modes: burst and tonic. The burst mode depends on the activation of a voltage-dependent, Ca2+ conductance underlying the low threshold spike. This conductance is inactivated at depolarized membrane potentials, but when activated from hyperpolarized levels, it leads to a large, triangular, nearly all-or-none de...
